Expert Q & A Answers About STD testing
I had unprotected sex with a girl and I want to find out if I have HIV. How long do I have to wait before I get an HIV test?
I had unprotected sex before I met my current partner. I’m the first and the only partner of the person I’m with now. I recently went to a clinic to get myself tested and I have no STDs. If my partner and I just stick with each other (for sexual pleasure), can we still get an STD through unprotected intercourse or through unprotected oral sex?
I am sexually active and have been with more than one partner. Four months ago, I had a Pap smear and it came back normal. However, today I got a sports physical and my urine came back with bacteria. Since my last Pap smear, I have been with just one person and I know he hasn’t been with anyone else. Could I have an STD even though my Pap smear was normal? Do Pap smears detect STDs? I have not had any symptoms or problems.
What tests detect STDs? Is there one test or are there a series of tests?
My girlfriend and I aren’t going to sleep together until we’re married...but she has had two previous partners, and I haven’t had any. What kinds of STD testing should we have before marriage to make sure we’re both healthy? I’ve heard that HIV might not show any physical effects for a long time, so this worries me.
I’ve only had sex once, but now I have a burning sensation when I pee. Did I catch an STD from my girlfriend?
I’ve only had sex once with my current girlfriend who has no symptoms of any STDs. I wore a condom and the sex was really brief. But now I have a burning sensation when I pee. I’ve been tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia, and both came back negative. Could my partner have given me something else?
I am 17 years old, and I’ve just been diagnosed with my first yeast infection. My boyfriend and I enjoy oral sex and I was wondering how long I should wait until we can have oral sex again? Until the itching is gone?
My boyfriend and I have been together for almost two years. Before we had sex for the first time, we both got tested by our doctors for STDs and all the tests came back negative. I also just saw my gynecologist for my yearly exam and all the tests came back normal. This week, I noticed a bump that looked like a pimple on the outside of my vagina. It caused some pressure so I popped it. Now it is healing. Should I be concerned about herpes, or was this just a pimple?
I’m a 21-year-old female and I’ve only had one sexual partner my whole life. We have been having sex monogamously for about a year now and we use a condom about 90% of the time. I get herpes outbreaks on my mouth and sometimes my nose when I’m sick or under a lot of stress. I haven’t had an outbreak for about six months. Today I noticed a very small pinkish bump on the inside of my vaginal lip. It only hurts when I press on it really hard, but I’m scared it could be herpes. I have a prescription for acyclovir for my oral herpes. Would this work to get rid of the bump on my vaginal lip?
I’m wondering about syphilis testing options, if any. I thought I got tested for all STDs when I saw my doctor the last time, but a friend told me that I have to make a point to tell my doctor that I want to get tested. What’s true? And can syphilis be cured?
