Smartphone applications may make safer sex easier
One obstacle that sometimes gets in the way of people practicing safer sex is not having a condom. As a result, certain municipalities and organizations have developed smartphone applications to help individuals find locations that distribute free condoms.
Last year, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene launched the NYC condom finder application, which gives information on the facilities that offer free condoms, as well as their hours of operation and tips on how to use the contraceptives.
"Using a condom every time you have sex protects you and your partner from contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections," said Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner.
BBC News recently reported that Kent's National Health Service is offering a similar application. However, teens who use this app are required to have an appointment with a healthcare provider, who can help them register for a card that will allow them to receive free contraceptives.
In addition to using condoms, individuals should get tested regularly for sexually transmitted diseases to prevent infection or transmission.
