What kind of sample does the test require?
The HIV test is a blood test. At the lab, the lab tech will draw a blood sample.
How do I prepare for the HIV test?
There is no special preparation required for the HIV test.
Who should get an HIV test?
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines recommend universal HIV screening on an annual basis for individuals between ages 13 to 64. If you have had unprotected sex and have not been tested this year, or if you've never been tested, consider getting an HIV test.
Many different kinds of people are affected by HIV regardless of age, gender, race, or sexual orientation. In fact, the highest numbers of new HIV cases are in middle aged adults ages 35 to 44.
What will my HIV results tell me?
This test result will either be abnormal or normal. Abnormal means there are signs of HIV. Normal means no signs of HIV were detected. A confirmatory test is always run before making an HIV diagnosis.
The lab automatically runs a confirmation of any abnormal HIV antibody result. Experts agree that another test should be run on a new blood sample before making a formal diagnosis of HIV, and our doctors believe all medical professionals should follow this recommendation.
An abnormal HIV result does not mean that you have AIDS. If your test result is abnormal, one of our doctors will talk with you about your results and arrange for you to see a specialist in your area regarding additional testing, treatment, and next steps.
Is there a cure for HIV?
While there is no cure for HIV today, significant progress has been made in HIV treatment. It is now considered a chronic disease and can be managed successfully. We talk about living with HIV, not dying from it.
