Question:
Hi doctor, I'm just wondering if a girl has a regular 28 day period does she always ovulate on the 14 day? or will it occur on other day as well. And also can a girl ovulate during the first day of period?

I'm glad you wrote in with your question. Some women will say that they get their periods "like clockwork," meaning they can tell exactly what day it will begin. For the vast majority of women, however, there is some variation; often not much more than a few days or so. Most of what the human body experiences operates within certain ranges rather than on specific points.

As far as a woman ovulating while her period begins, this is probably more common than not. Remember that your period is the very end of your cycle. It is your body getting rid of it's preparation in the uterus, in case fertilization occurs. When it doesn't happen, your body eliminates all the uterine build up that it prepared and begins to get ready for the next opportunity. Very often, while the lining of the uterus is being shed, the ovary has already begun the process of maturing and releasing a new ovum (egg). Therefore, the processes of ovulation and menstruation usually overlap.

I hope this answered your questions. Thanks for writing in. Take care and be well. Larry Siegel
