Question:
My last period started on 7/11, I took the first pill of my new BC Pill pack the evening of 7/14, which was my normal time. Very early morning ( like 2am), I had sex on 7/15. I used condoms only to discover after the fact they had expired in January. I know I should have been ok still since I was on the pill but I freaked because I am already a single mom, and don't want to be pregnant. So I took my next pill the morning of 7/15, when I woke up, and then proceded to take the rest of the pack in the morning, rather then nighttime. That was the only time I have had sex during this cycle, and this morning 8/3, I took my final pill of the pack. I took a HPT this morning using my first morning urine, and it was negative. Was the more then likely accurate?

Commercially available home pregnancy urine tests can detect pregnancy shortly after a missed period, so if your period was not late, the test may have been done too early. Sensitive blood tests for the pregnancy hormone (HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin) have been developed that can detect early pregnancy as soon as 7 days after conception. Because home pregnancy tests can yield both false-positives and false-negatives, they should always be confirmed by a health care practitioner. The fact that you used a condom (even though it was expired) should have helped prevent pregnancy as long as the condom did not break during intercourse. When condoms are manufactured, they have a shelf life of several years, and depending upon how they were stored, may still work after the expiration date. The latex wears down with age and storage conditions. It sounds like you did everything as responsibly as you could given your situation. Condoms used with BC pills are very effective against pregnancy, so hopefully you avoided pregnancy this time. Good luck and write back if you have any other concerns.
