Dear Prego, I can understand why you would be concerned regarding twins, given your family history! Is your doctor aware that twins run in your family? It would seem that the ultrasound would show two babies by four months, but if you have not mentioned this information to your doctor yet, I would make sure that they knew now. Any home monitor devices can certainly be prone to operator error, you may be picking up the same heartbeat from another area, or possibly your own! Given you found another heartbeat near your ribcage, that heartbeat is most likely yours as the uterus is located just above the pubic area, very low in the abdominal region. I would make sure your doctor and the ultrasound techician knows about the paternal twin history, that way they can be more thorough in their examinations with you. Any other questions, please write back. Signed, Raven James
