Question:
I am 40 and getting ready to have a hysterectomy w/ removal of the ovaries. I have been researching the libido issues and vaginal atrophy. I have read several things that suggest a more regular sex life can help to prevent vaginal atrophy. Since Im single that can't be covered, but would vaginal stimulation manually or w/ vibrator help to keep the vaginal area blood flow and thus lubrication and atrophy diminished. I can find absolutely nothing on this. Any help is appreciated or suggestions also how often or not often if this would work would be safe. Thank you

There is very little research on this topic, but most experts would agree that stimulating your vaginal area manually or with a device (e.g., vibrator) could help prevent vaginal atrophy. Regular masturbation when you desire sexual activity but do not have an available partner would be recommended. You should masturbate when you desire to do so. In addition, you can consider the use of estrogen to prevent (or reverse) vaginal atrophy. This could involve taking estrogen pills or using a hormonal form of contraception. Talk to a medical doctor about your options. You might consider checking your genitals on a regular basis after a shower or bath so that you can monitor any changes and detect early vaginal atrophy. You could also do this via regular visits to your health provider. If vaginal atrophy does seem to start occurring, then you can consider taking estrogen.
