Question:
Im 16 years old and I've had my period for about 3 years now. My period has mostly been pretty irregular, but now it's almost 25 days late. I've never had sex or anything like that. I've been taking new diet pills for about 3 weeks now. Can this be the cuase of my late period? If not, what can be?

Well, if you have not been sexually active, it would seem that you have no risk of pregnancy. Women can be irregular with their periods throughout their whole lives. Some women are like clockwork, bleeding the same number of days apart, and others fluctuate with their cycles over the course of their fertile years. Are you thin, or of athletic build? Women who are athletes and have low body fat composition experience periods of time where they do not have their menstrual cycles (amenorrhea - or the absence of a period). It is very individual and can last months or even years. Amenorrhea is more common among athletes than the general population. Certainly, some medications can be the cause of delayed menstrual cycles as well. It can also be normal for young women (as well as older women nearing menopause) to start their periods and then stop for a number of months before resuming. 25 days late can be "normal" for a woman who's periods are irregular. I know women who went from periods every six or seven weeks at one point in their lives to periods every 3 or 4 weeks. Is there a clinic you can visit to ask about your concerns? Otherwise, you may want to discontinue the diet pills to see if you resume your menstruation. Medical or hormonal problems can cause women to stop menstruating also. Sometimes, poor diet or nutrition can affect a woman's cycles as well. Gaining weight or improving diet can allow the cycle to resume. If this information is not helpful to you, you may want to consult a doctor for further assistance. Good luck, and write back if you have any more questions regarding your sexual health.
