Question:

I'm 15 and I'm at least 100 pounds overweight. I've noticed that I've missed at least 4 periods in a row and I'm not pregnant. I also read that it could be due to physical activity, but volleyball was over in February. I'm too shy to tell my mom or go to my doctor on my own. It makes me feel uncomfortable to talk about it. Could it be due to masterbation? Please help me!

First let me reassure you that your lack of having a period is not at all related to masturbation. I know that talking to someone is probably related to the fear that someone will then find out that you are enjoying some sexual arousal through touching yourself. You don't have to even worry about that.

It is hard to know why you haven't gotten a period. What IS important is that you are wondering about it, and trying to figure out what it could be. It might be related to your weight, since hormones which trigger menstruation travel through our body fat. That is why a girl who is anorexic almost always is without periods. She has too little body fat to transport the hormones. That is why exercise is related to it as well. The type of exercise is really heavy fat burning, and usually only athletes who have very little fat in relation to muscle are those that miss their periods.

I know that you are embarrassed to talk to your Mom about it, but I do encourage you to tell her that you haven't had a period and that you want to visit a doctor to find out if it is anything that you should do something about.

This is a health issue, not a sexual one. Getting your period has nothing to do with any type of sexual arousal so don't worry. Just get up the nerve to talk to someone you trust about it.

Thanks for writing and please write again if I can help you.
