Question:
Is intercourse possible after a hysterectomy?
|
Answer: by : (05/13/2004)
There are different forms of surgical
hysterectomies. Many hysterectomies involve only
removing the uterus and fallopian tubes. The uterus is
where a fetus will develop and from where the
menstrual flow comes from. In a complete
hysterectomy the ovaries are also removed. The
ovaries are important for producing the hormones that
help regulate the menstrual cycle and maintain the
females’ secondary sexual characteristics. After a
hysterectomy a female will no longer menstruate or be
able to give birth but she is still able to engage in
sexual activities. Some of the reasons why a female
may undergo these surgical procedures include cancer,
endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain. Some women
may experience a decline in their sexual desires and
orgasmic capabilities after a hysterectomy, especially
in cases of complete hysterectomies. However, the
vagina and clitoris are not altered by these procedures
and therefore do not interfere with the ability to
engage in intercourse. Since the clitoral area is full of
sensitive nerve endings many women also find that
they are still able to reach orgasm after hysterectomy.
