Question:
Recently, my girlfriend ended one pack of contraceptive pills, had her period and on the seventh day, when she was supposed to start the new pack; se started a new pack but of a different brand of contraceptive pills. Her doctor said that as a precausion, we should wear other protection for the first seven days, to let the new pill take effect. We had intercourse, on the last day of her period, (two days after starting the new pill) without any other contraceptive method. I did not ejaculate inside her, yet im still worried about pre-cum. Is there any possibility she might be pregnant?
Also, in one of the previous questions asked, one of the consultants said that "you should not have sex while youre on your period" If this is true, why?
Thanks for your help in this matter!

A very good question and I am very glad that you are educating yourself about this. I wish you had followed the doctor's directions and used a latex condom until the 7 days had gone by though, and then you wouldn't be worried. The doctor gave those directions because it might take the body 7 days to recognize the presence of those hormones to stop ovulation, and to prevent a pregnancy. It IS possible that a pregnancy occured because there can be sperm in pre-cum and you could have put that sperm inside her body. Because she had been on another type of pill chances are the body was still responding to it, though, and you probably aren't at much risk. If she does not get a normal period this next time, be sure that she gets a pregnancy test. Birth control pills are very effective IF used as directed, and you violated that just a little.
As far as having sex during your period, there is nothing wrong with doing that but if you aren't using a method of pregnancy prevention , pregnancy is possible. The body ovulates an egg sometimes during the menstrual period or shortly thereafter in some women. There is no way to regulate when ovulation takes place (ovulation is when the egg then becomes present in the fallopian tubes and can be impregnated by sperm)and sometimes it ovulates during the period.
I really urge you to learn to use latex condoms and not rely on the female to be on the pill. The advantage to using condoms besides they can create a longer arousal and not let ejaculation occur so quickly, is that they help protect against sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. Then you wouldn't be so worried.
Thanks for writing and feel free to ask more questions if you have them.Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
