Question:
Before and after I have sex, I always empty my bladder and clean myself off. After sex, I began to itch on my clitoris, vaginal opening, and it hurts sometimes too. The other day I took a mirror positioned it to where I could see my vagina. There was a white discharge, and I took a q-tip wiped the discharge from out of my vagina, after that, it stop itching. this only happens after sex, this even when I use condoms. I have been using this creme called Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide. Also, I noticed that the inside of my vagina looked to be peeling, I don’t know what that could be from. I'm wondering is it from having different sex partners and switching to a new one? About a month ago I had gardenella.

Vaginal infections can really be annoying, so I’m glad you’re paying attention to symptoms. The symptoms you mentioned could indeed be from a new partner. However, since you mentioned the very common vaginal bacteria infection called gardenella, you should be aware that this is sometimes difficult to treat & you may still have that infection. It’s usually recommended that you AND your sexual partner(s) be treated at the same time. The creme you mentioned is an anti-fungal, not the usual antibiotic prescribed – Flagyl (pronounced: FLAJ-ill). Talk to your physician about your present symptoms & about a lab test to identify exactly what you have. Sometimes there is more than one type of infection at work. Many vaginal infections have similar symptoms, such as itching, discomfort and discharge.
If your doctor prescribes Flagyl, be aware that it isn’t a great experience for some, as there may be diarrhea and nausea, but it's only for seven days. Do not drink any type of alcohol while taking Flagyl because the combination can cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and flushing. It can also change the taste of an alcoholic beverage. When finished with Flagyl, wait at least 72 hours before consuming alcohol. Avoid over-the-counter medications containing alcohol, such as cough and cold products. Try to avoid sexual intercourse until the infection is cured. If you do have sex, use a condom.
Ask the doctor about preventing gardenella reocurrence & how to avoid a yeast infection from the Flagyl. It’s a frustrating cycle to go from one infection to another, so be sure you follow good vaginal health:
-Stay healthy. Eat well-balanced meals. Get plenty of rest. Exercise regularly.
-Keep your vagina clean & dry. Bathe daily & be sure to wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom.
-Do not wear tight fitting underpants & clothing. Cotton-crotch underpants are ideal.
-Stay away from irritating chemicals such as douching products, bubble baths, hygiene sprays, & scented or colored toilet paper.
-Use condoms every time - to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases, until you find trustworthy monogamy, are both tested, & certain neither has other continued risk factors.
