Question:
I had a medical exam with my gynocologist not too long ago and everything went well, so it is safe to say that i have no diseases. a guy that i am currently seeing and whom i am involved with has never been tested for any sexual diseases. if we use a condom EVERY time, is it necessary for him to get tested too? he says that he doesnt have any sort of disease, but its not that i dont trust him, its that i dont trust the other people he has been with. ive also read alot about the fact that there are alot of people out there who have diseases and dont even know it. also, does a pap smear test for STD's?

Thank you for submitting your question. It is very important to take care of your sexual health and certainly you are doing that. In terms of your question, the more partners we have, the more at risk we are for being exposed to a sexually transmitted disease. While condoms are the best method for safe sex, there are diseases that can still be spread. Genital herpes, genital warts, and others infections can be spread through oral sex and other sex behaviors. These viruses are highly contagious. In fact, 1 out of 4 teens in America has a sexually transmitted infection. The guy you are involved with should still be tested because many STDs have no visible symptoms (and it is easier for a woman to contract an STD from a man). Even if you trusted the people he has been with, he should be tested anyway. As for your last question, a pap smear does not test for STDs. It checks for abnormal cells on the cervix. These abnormalities are not always STDs. If you are at your gynecologist you have to specifically ask for an STD test. I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you need anything else.
