Question:
I have and have always gotten cold sores on my lips. I give my boyfriend oral sex and was wondering if he will get the "genital herpies" from my cold sores. Is it bad to give him oral sex while i have them or are they two completely different kinds of herpies that won't affect each other. Please tell me in detail about this, thank you.

Cold sores on the mouth are caused by one variety of the herpes virus called HSV-1 (HSV=herpes simplex virus). Genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. It used to be said that HSV-1 was "above the waist" and HSV-2 was "below the waist"- although both viruses are found in both locations. When a person with a cold sore on or near the mouth orally stimulates their partner, the HSV-1 can be transmitted to that person's genitals. In fact, some studies suggest that more than half of new genital herpes cases are caused by this. Avoid giving your partner oral sex when you have a cold sore.
