Question:
my friend told me that if you have a coldsore and give oral sex, you can give your partner herpes. Is this true?

Answer:
by Larry Siegel:

Thank you for writing in and please accept our apologies for taking so long in getting back to you. The simple answer to your question is: YES. There are basically 2 types of herpes (simplex viruses) that are considered to be sexually transmitted infections (STIs). One is HSV-1, or oral herpes, and is usually referred to as a cold sore. The other is HSV-2 and is called genital herpes. No matter which one someone has, they can transmit the herpes virus wherever skin contacts a lesion or sore. If someone has a cold sore (oral herpes), they can actually pass it on through oral sex, giving someone else genital herpes. It can also be passed to someone else by kissing, especially when the herpes are active - showing visible sores. So as you can see, Jane, your friend was correct. Please visit the section on "STIs,STDs, HIV/AIDS" on our website and please write in if you have any other questions. Take care and be well. Larry Siegel
