Question:
I Have a friend who has HIV. She has agirlfriend she has sex with. My question is, Can you get HIV through dry blood from her? Her lover lick her dry blood off her arm and she don't cair if she gets HIV. She said the virus is dead and can't hurt her is that true. Please let me know what to tell her PLEASE. THANK-YOU

It's nice to see that you care enough about your friend to write in. I can well understand your concern, especially given the connection between HIV and blood. Unfortunately, your friend is probably right; once the blood itself has died/dried, HIV dies with it. However, no one really knows if there is a window of some kind where the virus may be able to "come back". Perhaps more definite than this, is the concern for Hepatitis B (and possibly C). Hepatitis B is one of the most robust viruses we know and can definitely survive for much longer periods of time in dried blood. This should be enough of a concern. Perhaps this is a way of showing defiance toward HIV; that they're not going to let the virus beat them or stand in their way. If so, maybe you can help them re-think the blood licking and find more positive ways of living with HIV. Thanks for writing in, and I wish you and your friends all the best. Larry Siegel
