I’m happy to hear that your lover has been tested & is being treated! There are 2 tests: A specimen is collected from an infected site (cervix or penis) to detect Chlamydia trachomatis, the bacterium that causes chlamydia. Another newer test detects chlamydia bacteria in a urine sample. Chlamydia can be easily treated & cured with antibiotics. One dose of azithromycin or a week of doxycycline (twice daily) are the most commonly used treatments. Untreated chlamydia can lead to serious reproductive & other health problems with both short-term & long-term consequences. In men, untreated chlamydia usually causes urethral infection. The infection can spread to the epididymis (the tube that carries sperm from the testicles), causing pain, fever, & potentially, infertility. Chlamydia is called a "silent" disease by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) because 3/4 of infected women & 1/2 of infected men have no symptoms. Chlamydia is frequently not diagnosed or treated until complications develop. Men with symptoms might have a discharge from the penis & a burning sensation when urinating. Men might also have burning & itching around the opening of the penis or pain & swelling in the testicles, or both. It’s impossible to say whether your lover has chlamydia or not until he gets his test results. As to your symptoms, it’s possible that your vaginal discharge is chlamydia. If symptoms do develop it’s usually 1 to 3 weeks after infection. Anyone with chlamydia can pass it on until treatment is over. You should be examined & treated. Although this sexually transmitted disease (STD) is curable, untreated chlamydia infections in women can spread past the cervix into the upper reproductive system, causing permanent & irreversible damage. Untreated chlamydia in women can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infertility, cystitis (a potentially very uncomfortable inflammation of the urinary tract & bladder), or mucopurulent (muke-o-PURE-you-lent) cervicitis, which is a yellow discharge from the cervix. It is important for you to know that you & your lover can pass chlamydia back & forth, so if your lover gets treated & you don't, he & you may get infected again. By the way, you & your lover are not alone, as chlamydia is the most common bacterial STD in America, particularly among sexually active adolescents & young adults. More than 650,000 cases were reported to CDC in 1999 with 3 of every 4 cases in persons under age 25. Most people with chlamydia are not aware of their infections, but it’s estimated that 3 million Americans are infected each year. By age 30, 50% of sexually active American women have had chlamydia.
