Question:
What sorts of infections is a man at risk for by performing unprotected anal sex on a woman? I recently had unprotected sex with a woman, and the base of my penis became pink and irritated during sex. I've been using jock-itch cream, but a mild irritation has persisted. Can a man get a urethral infection from anal sex? The inside of my penis feels mildly weird. I used a home UTI test, but the results were unclear (is a weak positive possible). The woman had a tiny soft fleshy bulb sticking out of her anus after sex, and she pushed it back in claiming she was "swollen". Is this normal? -Concerned

Without being able to see you, or find out a full medical history, I would only be guessing at what the nature of your problems might be. Yes, it is possible to get a Urinary Tract Infection from any foreign organism irritating the urethral mucosa, whether it has come vaginally, by the bowel or any other source. I recommend you see your GP for a more thorough examination, and any tests s/he deem relevant such as a mid-stream urine specimen (taken under sterile conditions) which is likely to show more detail than a home kit. If you have trouble voiding, and any pain or discomfort voiding, then you could have an infection, or cystitis (an irritation in the bladder). A visual examination, urine cloudiness and odor can often tell the doc if there is infection present or not, enough to start you on a course of antibiotics until the culture and sensitivity results of your Urine test is back from the lab. If you don't have an UTI, the doctor can tell you whether or not you are at risk from anything, and recommend any appropriate courses of treatment if necessary. Good Luck.
