I found a Video that my husband made of himself. The contents were of him pleasuring himself anally with purpose built toys or objects from around the home. When I confronted him with what I had found, he was very honest with me and said it had gone on for a few years, 5 to be exact. He told me that he did it for comfort, but I have great problems understanding what that actually means. I'd hate to see a marriage that includes a brilliant sex life and two children break up over a particular sexual desire of one of the partners that is not harmful to others. In light of your discomfort with this activity and your telling me that you have always found it difficult to show him true affection, I recommend you both go to a sex therapist together to get some guidance in understanding. I may have missed something because part of your question was cut-off but I think I got the gist.
