Question:
What would you recommend for a newly married couple with developmental disabilities who are hesitant to consummate their marriage? Do you have a 'learning' video available?

Answer:

"The Great Sex Series" There are times when clients are interested in learning more about the intimate life that may be shared by two consenting adults. The media often makes sexual intimacy into a sensationalised marathon and it would be difficult for some clients to sort out what in videos and movies would be real -- and what is unrealistic. There is a series of Videos available to care providers that may be useful to clients to learn about sexual pleasure -- both alone and with a partner. Each video shows sexual activities that can be enjoyed with a partner or alone. The video is interspersed with instructions from a narrator encouraging individuals to learn to celebrate sexual pleasure. While the narration may not be interesting to clients, it certainly offers suggestions for counsellors who would like to offer clients encouragement to explore the erotic nature of their bodies -- alone and with a consenting partner. In two of the videos, the narrator emphasizes the length of time that the respective couples have been together -- suggesting that the best sexual relationships are in the context of a long standing relationship. "The Great Sex Series" is a set of three videos that demonstrate sexual intimacy of varying degrees. The titles of the videos are as follows: Video 1- Taking Time to Feel; Video 2- Mutuality; Video 3- Sexual Pleasures. These videos were created by Dr. Frank Sommers and are distributed by Pathway Productions, P.O. Box 1033, Station F, Toronto, Ontario M4Y 2T7 Phone (416) 922-4506). The cost of the three videos (including shipping) is about $93 CDN.
