Question:
Dear Dr. Birch I am a 39 year old male who has been with the same women for 21 years. She is very sexual. My problem is that I still ejaculate within 1 to 3 minutes(and thats not continous thrusting). I am also on prozac for OCD. Sometimes I can last longer. She always seems satisfied and never has complained, but we are now seperated and I'm afraid I won't be able to please other women. Also, I can't get an erection when masterbating so that I can practice the start/stop method.

Anxiety can be a major contributor to rapid ejaculation, so the more a man worries about it, the faster he is likely to ejaculate. However, I cannot remember a time I told someone to storp worrying and they did! It is important to recognize the role of anxiety and work on that, medically and psychologically. It is also important to accept that ejaculation within the time frame you presented is not uncommon. You do know of the start/stop approach to ejaculatory control, it is important to practice that with your partner. It might work best, however, if you are on your back, remaining relaxed and totally passive. Let your partner move and you simply keep track of your level of arousal. I hope you have not been avoiding dating out of a fear of failure. To avoid only increases the anxiety, and if you have been unable to masturbate, it will only increase your excitability. Good luck.
