Question:
Dear Dr. McCaffree,

I have read some of your replies to questions that are similar to mine, but I have been completely stressing myself out over this. Eight days ago, I was lying in bed with my boyfriend. I was wearing pajama pants and underwear, and he was wearing jeans and boxers, but his jeans were unzipped. I noticed a wet spot on his boxers at one point. He was rubbing my vagina (but not directly, this was through my cotton underwear but not the pajama pants) with his hand for a while (and I'm not sure if there might have been semen or precum on his hands, I don't THINK there was, but I just am not sure), and then he was lying on top of me and I could feel his penis through the clothes pressing against my vagina (this part was through the underwear and pants on me, and his boxers too).

Ever since this happened, I have been completely scared of becoming pregnant from this somehow. I never felt anything wet touch my skin or vagina, and I'm not sure that the wet spot on his boxers even came in contact with my pants. I am also not sure if he actually ejaculated or if there was just precum. Help me, please, I am panicking.

The other thing you should know is that about a day after this happened, I did some research online and found out about the morning after pill and what its made of. I was on birth control last year to control my periods (I'm still a virgin though), and I had some extra pills left. I took two of the white Orthotricycline pills (the ones for the first week) and one blue one (the ones for the second week) at the same time, and then the next morning I took another white pill. My period had ended about 5 or 6 days before this encounter with my boyfriend happened, and I'm not sure when during my cycle I ovulate, especially since going off birth control has kind of messed up the cycle.

I had noticed some white discharge on my underwear around that time though. I am so scared at the prospect of becoming pregnant somehow. I know this probably sounds incredibly paranoid to you, and as if I don't know anything about sex, but if you could please tell me if there is even the slightest chance of my being pregnant from what happened, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have been researching this a lot online, and it seems like everyone has a different idea about whether or not this could actually happen. Tonight I started feeling lightheaded, and i'm not sure if this is because I have been stressing myself out so much over this, or if it is an early sign of pregnancy. Please help me, Dr. I am driving myself crazy over this and I need some help. I can't take a pregnancy test until the end of the month, and I think I will probably delay my period from stressing out so much from waiting til then. Thank you for your help, and if you could point me in the direction of any helpful literature or research about this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for asking even more questions. It is important that we learn as much as we can about what might create a pregnancy. It sounds as if you have been doing lots of research already, so I will give you the best answer I can.

Obviously, the only way to know for sure, is to take a pregnancy test two weeks from now, but I really don't think you need to. If you have read my answers to others you will know that sperm is not nearly as powerful as some would make us believe.

I do not think you are paranoid because I was once as nervous as you are about having a boy touch me and possibly cause a pregnancy. What you need to know is that sperm is very fragile and cannot swim through clothing, especially the many layers that you describe.

Even if your boyfriend was wet, that would have been from pre-cum and the research we have, which is very reliable is that there is no sperm in pre-cum unless the male has just ejaculated a few minutes before and not urinated since then.

See, pre-cum is designed to clean out the urethra (the tube in the penis) before the main ejaculation comes out. Sperm is so fragile that even in semen, if it gets into the acids from urine in the urethra it can be damaged, thus the male's body helps facilitate the sperm, in semen, through that area.

Since you didn't mention that your boyfriend actually ejaculated, the wetness on his shorts is just pre-cum, which is just early fluids from the Cowper's gland.

Enjoying pleasuring as you described just isn't dangerous for pregnancy unless the penis ejaculates semen (with sperm in it) at the opening of the vagina or inside the vagina. It is not at all risky just to rub together with clothes on. The erect penis can touch your body as long as you both are covered and it just isn't going to create a pregnancy.

If you want information on the research about sperm in pre-cum, it is in the book Contraceptive Technology, 1998 by Hatcher, et al.

As for the morning after pill, which is commonly called Emergency Contraception, now days, it a heavy dose of birth control pills within 72 hours of the unprotected or unplanned intercourse. Not all the variations of birth control pills work for this though, so I recommend that if you are worried next time, just go to a local family planning clinic, or in some states the pharmacy (since I don't know what state you live in it is hard to know what the state law is on where EC is distributed) or even the emergency room of a hospital. EC is provided by all of the above.

I hope this helps ease your worries, and if you have other questions, please feel free to write again.
