Question:
Dear Doctor Konstance McCaffree,

If I may ask you, please tell me if the questions about the age, when adolescent masturbation began, and the length of the period of the adolescent masturbation have the sense from the sexological's point of view?

Would this question be important for you from the clinical point of view? Once again, does the age of beginning of adolescent masturbation and the duration of it during adolescence have the significance for sexual well being?. From sexual health's point of view, is there a difference if man masturbates 2, 10, or 80 years of his life? If all other components of sexual activities are the same...

Sincerely, Bob

Thank you for your excellent question. It isn't an easy question to answer from the research because the research really hasn't been done.

Learning about one's body and how it responds sexually is very important to the health of the body. We will then take better care of our body if we know how it works and know that what we are doing feels good. We really don't know if a person began masturbating at age 2 if it enhances his/her physical health over starting at the age of 10. What we do know just was reported in the scientific literature this past few weeks.

Maybe this will help answer your question.

For more than two decades therapists have been arguing and teaching that regular sexual release was an important way to guard against future prostate problems. Of course no one could PROVE it, but it followed very directly from what we had learned about chronic pelvic muscle tension. Now researchers in Australia have documented the connection.
