Question:
is it normal for a man who is in a healthy sexual relationship to masterbate & watch pornography ? If the answer is yes, how often is normal?

Answer:

Normal, may not be the best word or concern. "Normal" often refers to a mathamatical average and people assume that because a certain number of people do something it is "normal" A second use of the word refers to "free from emotional disorder." Used with this meaning, masterbation and watching pornography could be an indicator of a problem. If for example such behavior is accompanied by feelings of fear, shame, or sadness etc., or is a source of contention within the relationship, such behavior needs a closer evaluation. Normally, as a therapist, this type of behavioral pattern is seen when there is an effort to avoid intimacy and as such does represent a problem.
