Thank you for submitting your question. It is very common for parents to become confused and embarrassed when their children start exploring their bodies. You son's erections are very common and it is important that he knows this. When you feel that the time is right (in the car, during breakfast - you will know what is best), casually mention that because he is 10, he will start to experience some new feelings. Talk to him about erections (and puberty in general). Tell him they (erections) are very common and can happen at any point during the day. Also explain what masturbation is. Tell him that touching his genitals is a very normal activity and one that probably feels very good. Let him know that if he needs his privacy, you will respect that. Explain that masturbation is a private activity and if he chooses to masturbate, that you will respect his closed door. Obviously, you have to be comfortable with this. And know that it is okay to be uncomfortable and embarrassed. But practice makes perfect - nobody gets the conversation exactly right the first time! I hope this information helps.
