Question:
I am a healthy 46 year old woman. My boyfriend is a 47 year old quad. We have been together for a year now. We have found many ways to be sexually intimate with each other even though he can't bang me. One of the things he enjoys is my giving him head. He has an indwelling catheter which we usually leave in. Can I contract any infections from doing this? I've been a little concerned since he has frequent bladder infections.

Glad to hear you have discovered ways to pleasure each other. While performing oral sex on your partner carries little risk of contracting an infection specific to his bladder infection, the other risks of getting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) from oral sex remain. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are two bacterial infections to be particularly weary of when 'giving head'. Both of these STDs can infect an individual's mouth and throat during unprotected oral sex. The herpes virus is another STD that can easily be transmitted via oral sex. For example, a person with oral herpes (your classic cold sore) can give his/her partner genital herpes through oral-genital contact. Furthermore, the STD HIV should not be completely disregarded either. Though HIV transmission through oral sex is low-risk, the virus can be transmitted through tiny tears in the mouth or via bleeding gums during oral sex. With or without the indwelling catheter in place, because of STDs like these it is always a good idea to practice safer sex. The catheter does not prevent you from using a condom. Once the penis is fully erect you can bend the catheter down along the shaft of the penis and slip a condom right on over it. And this doesn't have to be just any old condom! One of the best things about practicing safer sex is that it can get really tasty! Condom manufacturers these days make all sorts of condoms to make oral sex more pleasurable for the giver as well as the receiver. So use condoms in flavors like chocolate or strawberry and go to town pretending that your devouring an ice cream cone as your mouth works its way up and down his shaft. A little hungry perhaps? Get an edible condom that you can eat after oral sex, in flavors like Pina Colada. Special sex shops also sell flavored gels and lubes, i.e. Irish Creme flavor, to make sex a tad tastier. You can even find tastier sex supplies in your own kitchen cabinet if you have a handy jar of honey or bottle of chocolate syrup to grab the next time you need to make that condom tasty. Tip: If you use a condom during oral sex, make sure that it isn't a spermicidally lubricated condom! Yuck!
