Question:
i've always had small bumps on penis similar to the ones around the nipples on girls, what are they? can I get rid of them? they're not painfull unless I bother them like I would a pimple. sometimes white stuff comes out sometimes not. when I do this they go red for a while then return to original state. They're probably not a problem except that they hurt my self esteem. I dont feel normal with them.Ive had the same sex partner for 4 years and I know Im not sick. plz help

Self esteem & self image are often at risk by our concern to be normal. I’m glad to see that you are very aware that the real issue is your fear of not being like every one else, i.e., normal. From what you’ve said, especially that the bumps have always been on your penis, this is probably normal penis skin. The only way to be sure is to have your doctor check the bumps to give a medical opinion.
Often we are our own worst critic. Many of us share the same fears & doubts. If this is your only area of self doubt, perhaps the following information will reassure you that all is well. If not, counseling could make a wonderful difference in the way you view yourself.
The entire surface of human skin has hair follicles & sebaceous glands - except the palm of the hand & the sole of the foot. Hair follicles are on the scrotum & the shaft of the penis out to the end of the foreskin, although the hairs are probably not visible. Sebaceous glands are found wherever hairs are found. They produce a white oily substance called sebum, and if squeezed this material can be pushed out. It’s not advisable to squeeze them because it hurts & may cause them to become infected.
White heads on the face are engorged sebaceous glands. Sebaceous cysts, which may occur anywhere, are caused by a blocked sebaceous gland forcing the sebum to build up into a cyst. Sebaceous glands usually can’t be seen because skin is thick enough to hide it. However, on the thin, fine skin of the penis, sebaceous glands may be very prominent These glands are probably the small bumps you describe. When hairs produced by the hair follicles are fine and invisible, the sebaceous glands connected to the follicle are often large. Therefore, when you look at the skin of the penis you’re likely to notice the prominent bump of the sebaceous gland. Hope this helps you view your bumps in a new way!Reviewed by Sexual Health Editorial Team
