Question:
I am a C6-7 quad. After my car accident I was exposed to a lot of radiation from x-rays. Since my recovery I have had a rather irregular menstrual cycle each month that runs been 28 and 36 days in length. My question is, in your opinion should I still be able to become pregnant, baring an other problems, and if so what would be the best time for me to possible conceive? I've been told that usually the 14th day, but that has not worked for me. Also with the SCI what are some of the major problems that I may encounter in a pregnancy?

Thank you for your email. Here is some general answers after spinal cord injury. Menstrual periods can actually stop and it is not uncommon for cycles to be irregular for up to a year. If cycles are irregular after six months, some base line blood tests should be checked. Your doctor might want to check a prolactin and/or thyroid hormone level. Prolactin especially can be affected after spinal cord injury and this could affect the regularity of your cycles. If you are having irregular periods then you are probably not ovulating or if you are, it may not be that often. It is hard to time sexual activity if you don't have regular periods. Also it would be difficult to get pregnant if you don't ovulate regularly. See if you can get these blood tests to check this out. If anything is found, it is pretty straight forward to treat it. I hope this helps you a little bit. Please let me know if I missed anything. SW, MD
