Question:
I generally masturbate about 5 or 6 times a week, and I was concerned that this was too much. I thought I would be able to reduce this to only once or twice a week, but after 5 days I experienced a stinging sensation inside my penis and a weak orgasm when I ejaculated. I don't want to endanger my sexual performance in any way. Since I don't currently have a sexual partner, is there any danger to me physically (or mentally) if I put a halt to my masturbation habit? How much is too much, and how much is too little?

I worry that you have labeled your masturbation "a self inflicted problem." If you are 24 (a relatively young man) and without a partner, you will do no harm to yourself if you masturbate as you feel the physical need. Let me say that again so you understand. If your body can easily respond every day of the week, you can chose to masturbate with no physical or mental ill-effects. If your head says "I should masturbate, but your body does not need it, then it might be more of a compulsion. It sounds to me as thought you are generally responding to your recurring drive, and that is normal. In fact, it is generally considered to be healthier to respond to your bodyand enjoy it than to think of it as wrong and attempt to repress it.
If after you have met a partner who wants to be sexual with you, you will need to monitor yourself to see if you are using your masturabation as a way of avoiding sex with this person. Until then just do what comes naturally and try to shake that negative attitude about a very normal human activity.Reviewed by Sexual Health Editorial Team
