Question:
do you think that by not seeing any images of
sexually attractive or positive physically disabled
people, that portion of society is forced to feel even
more alienated? Why do you think that main stream
culture, an extremely sexual culture, has left out
physically disabled people in movies, TV, and
magazines?

Answer: by Linda Mona: ()
In answer to your first question, yes, I do think that
the lack of positive sexual role models has influenced
the degree to which people with disabilities feel good
about their sexuality. we receive the message about
what is sexy or desirable from society and the media
specifically. I think that there is a history of society
having very narrowly defines ideas of what is
attractive. and more often than not, difference has not
been deemed sexually desirable. that is, those of us
who do not have "perfect" looking bodies do not
usually fit into societal views of sexual attractiveness.
thus, people with disabilities have been left out of the
loop.
we have seen some changes in recent years with the
increase use of models and actors/actresses with
disabilities but few of these images are portrayed in a
positively sexual manner. my hope is that within the
years to come, this trend will change as a result of
continued efforts among people with disabilities to
provide accurate information about our lives to the
public in addition to making us more visible to society
as a whole.
your questions were very interesting!!!
