Question:
I recently had sex with my girlfriend, and I did not use a condom. I clearly pulled out before I ejaculated but what I want to know is: can she possibly be pregnant even if I did not ejaculate inside of her? What are the odds? How should I approach her about my question, because I have not talked to her about this yet.

Answer: by Robert Birch: ()
The anxiety of worrying is often not worth the risk of taking a chance! There is no way anyone could give you the odds on a pregancy without an ejaculation, for as you suspect, there could be a very small number of active sperm in your pre-ejaculate (Cowper's gland fluid that comes from a small gland that runs into your urethra just inside your body). This gland does not produce sperm and usually does not contain sperm, but there is always the chance that some will have wandered and been picked up in this clear sticky fluid. I can't tell you the odds on having sperm in your pre-ejaculate.
But, even if there were some sperm in the pre-ejaculate, sperm don't aways find their way to a fertile egg, so I can't tell you the odds of your sperm surviving the trip.
Finally, the chance pregnancy is also very dependent of whether or not the female in that phase of her cycle that she has produced an egg that is capable of being fertilized. Without knowing where your girlfriend was in her menstrual cycle, I have no way to estimate the odds that she could have become pregnanant.
The safest policy right now is to wear a condom from beginning to end. You owe it to yourself and to the young lady you are with to guarantee total safety. Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
