You’ve asked an important question about transmission of HPV (human papilloma virus). This virus is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact during sex. Your semen does not give warts to another person. It's true that genital warts are most likely to be transmitted when warts are present. However, even when no warts are seen & the virus is latent, HPV may still be contagious. In addition, warts can be present but too small to be seen with the naked eye. This is called subclinical HPV. Scientists simply don’t know about passing subclinical HPV to sex partners, although some believe it’s less likely to be transmitted than genital warts you can see. If you’re sexually active, condoms are recommended, but since some skin remains exposed it’s not 100% protection. You can keep up with the latest findings on genital warts by calling the National HPV & Cervical Cancer Hotline at (919) 361 – 4848, between 2 & 7pm, Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. You can also check their website at http://www.ashastd.org/hpvccrc/index.html . Or, of course, you’re welcome to submit further questions to us.
