Thank you for writing to Sexualhealth.com. This is a great forum to ask a question like this -- because I'm sure that there are many others out there who wonder about this and other similar issues!
I don't know of any websites that deal with this issue specifically.
There are some resources, however that may be helpful. First, I highly recommend the series of booklets called Sexuality, Relationships and Me: Sexuality Booklets for Young Adults. These can be ordered from the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, 811-14 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2N 2A4. Or call, (403) 270 8500 of Fax (403) 270 8291 or E-Mail cdss@ican.net. Or visit the Canadian Down Syndrome Society Website at http://home.ican.net/~csss. It doesn't contain a book about Homosexuality per se, but has some great information about relationships in general.
Next, I recommend a copy of the Being Sexual Series. Contact
SIECCAN to see if you can get a copy -- and if not, tell them to ask me to send you a copy. This has one booklet about homosexuality that is very helpful and informative. The series also has a lot of information about sexuality in general.
Finally, I am attaching a bibliography of books about
sexuality in a context. Some of the books are about being homosexual -- others are just about emerging as a sexual being in adolescence. They are novels -- high interest, low vocabulary and put sexual interests into a typical teenaged context.
I would also recommend that you contact your local P.F.A.G.
chapter. They may be able to offer you information and support on a local level. I don't know if P.F.L.A.G. has a website, but they
are a valuable community resource wherever they are found!
I hope this gets you started on your journey! As always, I hope you find others who are on the same road!
Remember, the three most important things to have if you are
teaching sexuality -- 1) Network, 2) Network and 3) Network! There are others out there who have similar interests and concerns. I hope you connect with them!
Sincerely,
SusanReviewed by: Annette Owens M.D.,
