Question:
What are the hidden risks of sex during your period?

Answer:
by Yvonne Fulbright:
(02/14/2005)
Since a woman can get pregnant at any point in her menstrual cycle, even when she has her period, it would be wise to use a condom and/or other form of birth control during this time of the month. Using a condom is also a good idea as far as decreasing the risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STIs), including HIV. During a woman's period, her cervix has opened itself up more for the passage of blood, and this increases the risk of STI transmission during sex, including oral sex (giving people even more incentive to use a barrier, like a dental dam, when going down on a woman). Lastly, even though many feel that a woman's menstrual flow acts as a natural lubricant, her vagina actually dries out a little during her period. Using lube can help to alleviate this problem. Thank you for visiting the Sexual Health Network. Best, Yvonne K. Fulbright, M.S.Ed., Ph.D.(c)
