Question:
Dear Dr. Owens, I am a 24 year old female. I have been in a serious relationship for two and a half years. When my boyfriend and I started dating, I was a 'technical' virgin, that is to say, I had never had penile penetration. After six months, we decided to have sex. For the first few months we used condoms, then I went on the pill. I dont' remember clearly what my vaginal fluid was like when we used condoms, but I don't remember it being excessive. Since I have been on the pill (combination), I find that I have a lot of fluid discharge after sex, especially when I orgasm (luckily most of the time!). This means that I have to run to the toilet and often drip down my legs! It is a disaster if I cough or laugh!! I have never had sex with anyone else, so I don't know if they fluid id mine or his, but probably a mixture. However, if I am not too aroused, we don't have this amusing problem. I want to know if the 'famle ejaculation' is real and if perhaps the Pill is making me have excess fluid. WHy do I have a 'waterfall'? I would like to snuggle after sex, but I have to tip-tpoe to the toilet now....Also, when I masturbate, I don't have any fluid. I orgasm just by thinking about sex, without manual stimulation, so maybe that is why there is no fluid in the case. HELP!

First of all, female ejaculation is not a myth. It does indeed happen to many women, and you might be one of them. The book The Clitoral Truth by Rebecca Chalker has a whole chapter written about female ejaculation. Second, how wonderful that you seem to have such an easy time reaching orgasm; sometimes just by mental activity. This also is not unusual even though most people need physical stimulation of their genitals. With respect to the discharge, I assume that you have ruled out infections. The fluid could very well be due to your partner’s ejaculate. The amount of ejaculate may vary from time to time, but there can be significant amounts which will of course be a subject to gravity once you get up or change position. I would try to use a condom for a few times to see whether the situation changes. You seem to be too young for incontinence problems. Many older women especially after childbirth have problems with leaking during sex. If this problem persists you should mention it to your doctor or gynecologist during a future check-up. Sincerely, Annette Owens, MD PhD
