Question:
I'm 18 yrs old and I used to love to have sex. Recently though I have taken a liking to masturbation. I would prefer to masturbate than have sex. Is this normal for a female my age?

Adolescent relationships can be a minefield with lots of raging hormones and sexual cycles happening. Girls tend to prefer a lot of touching from her partner whereas boys want to jump to the good stuff and get right to penetration. With less touching, women can sometimes become disillusioned with sex and discontented with relationships that have less touching and foreplay, and attention to the emotional aspects and pull away from instigating and pursuing relationships for a few months or longer.
Self pleasuring can sometimes be a less complicated alternative or an adjunct to a healthy sex life. Most but not all people masturbate. The first Kinsey report written in 1948, describes men and women who recall experiencing orgasms around the age of five onwards. His landmark studies showed that masturbation far from being an abnormal behaviour was something almost everyone did and from an early age.
It is not unusual at your age to be open to sexual experimentation and exploration. You are learning more about your own body and what feels good, so in time you can teach your partner what you know feels good. Consider it a time of learning, rather than a time of sadness. Despite the society inference, you don't have to have a partner to be a complete person. No matter what you do, just remember to always practice safe sex, and if in doubt - then don't!
