Question:
Truth in Advertising
I recently read an ad in the personals section of a local paper that read, "X-tra Moxie Vertically challenged, horizontally
enhanced, educated, professional SWF in search of interesting, accepting gentleman." Is this PC lingo? I've thought of
placing a personal ad but have labored over whether or not to mention my disability up front or wait until later.

I suspect the terms are used to add humor, not political correctness. Personally, I prefer to use "a woman with a disability" or
"a woman who uses a wheelchair."
It's a personal decision whether or not to mention your disability. Some people with disabilities have told me that being
up-front in the ad weeds out the jerks in advance. Others don't mention their disability in the ad, but do so soon after the
first contact. I think it's a good idea to disclose your disability before meeting anyone in person.
Personal ads can be risky. I suggest you correspond with a new acquaintance for awhile--by e-mail, voice mail and/or
telephone--before a face-to-face meeting. One other word of caution--attend the meeting with a "silent" friend who can
intervene if your safety turns out to be at risk.
