Question:
Hello Dr., I am an uncircumcized male and have been masturbating on and off for about 7 years. My question is, every time I masturbate, it seems as if the skin of the penis becomes thinner and veins appear throught the skin, but recently some large veins have popped up. I don't masturbate often so why does this occur Is this normal?

Prominent veins on the penis are a common occurrence and need not cause any worry. They are not the result of masturbation or any other sexual practice. The bulging occurs as they are filled with blood and the draining is slow. (Remember how the veins of your mid arm bulge when you tighten your fist, hold the biceps tightly, and pump the hand? Did you notice that some men have very prominent veins on their hands and feet? Penile veins are just the same).
Some experts believe that there may be an association between varicose veins in the scrotum and prominent veins on the penis but the issue is not beyond debate. In any case this is not an alarming condition and does not lead to any sexual or other problems.
