Some women have intact hymens at the time of first sexual intercourse, which may tear and produce some bleeding. Once torn, there is no question of returning to the previous state. In some others, the hymen is small or altogether absent so that penetration does not cause any bleeding or visual damage. However in either case the doctor cannot say whether a woman had sexual intercourse just by looking at the hymen, because the hymen can be torn under many other circumstances, the most common being masturbation, use of tampons, cycling, aerobics and exercise.
