Question:
what it is has already been answered on this site (a discharge of fluid upon excitement), but my question is, is there anything i can do about it? i get it in intimate settings when no thought of sex even occurs, just being close, which gets in the way of being comfortable(re: wetness). in fact, usually i'm not even that sexually excited when it occurs, which is that much more frustrating/annoying.

I am afraid you cannot stop theis preejaculatory fluid. All you can do is understand that it is natural and therefore be happy about the good physiological response your body is displaying.
Different people have different patterns of release of this precoital fluid (precum). Some secrete very small quantity after much sexual excitement, and some in large quantity with very little sexual excitement and other combinations of these. Sometimes the precum is released a little after the sexual excitement starts to subside - this is probably why you will feel wet when you are not "that excited".
All this varies from person to person and situation to situation. This translates into the fact that over a period of time your pre-cum is likely to redcue in quantity and frequency. Please understand that this is not something one should be embarrassed or annoyed about.
It may help to understand that women also get very similar physiologcal response (vaginal lubrication) to sexual excitement, that too, in much greater quantity.Reviewed by Sexual Health Editorial Team
