Question:
My problem is excessive lubrication before and during
intercourse. Is there anything that will dry this up so to speak? It
makes for less enjoyable intercourse. I have a normal gyn exam too.
Is it due to too much estrogen?

Excessive lubrication is one complaint that I hear about once in
a blue moon. Most women experience that exact opposite of your
problem. The vagina is a muscular organ that is about 3 inches (8cm)
in length and is lined with a mucous membrane. There are no
separate secretory glands that are found in the vagina. During sexual
arousal there is an increase in the blood flow to the genital region.
This causes vasocongestion of the sexual organs and is responsible for
producing vaginal lubrication. This increased blood flow causes fluid
to seep across the vaginal lining in a process known as transudation.
An easy way to picture this is to think of blood vessels sweating.
Different women may produce different amounts of fluid depending
on the vascularization of their vaginal walls, degree of sexual
arousal, age, or use of certain medications. This is a natural process
and there is no way to block the vasocongestion of the genital organs
during sexual arousal. As you age you should see a decline in the
amount of fluid you produce. In the mean time you might consider
keeping a small hand towel next to your bed so you can easily wipe
away an extra fluid that might be causing you discomfort.Reviewed by Sexual Health Editorial Team
