Question:
I am 17 years old and I have had my period since I was 12-13 years old. All this time, the period of time between my menstruations has been of 3-5 months. Only once, last summer, this period was of 40 days. Since the first time till now, my mentruations have been mostly during holidays, especially in the last 2 years. An year and a half ago I passed through a difficult period, school is also exhausting and during this period of stress my mentruation was very late. Last year I had it 3 times, in April, July and August and then at the begining of this year, after winter holidays. But in the last year, before the menstruation, there was a period when those usual secretions that have to be white or a bit yellow were brown. After the menstruation they were their normal color again, but this year they are brwon after the mentruation too. This year I used tampons instead of pads (I'm not sure how you say it in English) even if I am a virgin.

Thank you for submitting your question. Every woman’s menstrual cycle is different, but typically regular. Your periods seem to be irregular, and that can be due to a number of reasons (stress, sports, poor nutrition, anorexia, etc). I recommend that you see a gynecologist or family healh clinic so that you can make sure that your body stays healthy. As for the white or brown color, this is normal. Around 12 – 14 days after your period begins, ovulation occurs. This is when an egg is released from the ovary. During this time, it is common for discharge (or cervical mucus) to be thick. It can look white or yellow or brown. Sometimes, women get cramps during this time too. Using tampons or pads does not affect your menstrual cycle so don’t worry about that. I hope this information helps. Take care.Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
