Question:
Actually I have a question. Where is the hymen located? I tried inserting a handle of a toothbrush in slowly and see if i would encounter any barriers; however, i encountered none. I am starting to get worried because a women's hymen is a sign of virginity and in the Chinese society, that is very important. My friend said that the hymen should be located about 3-5 cm from the opening...is it possible that it is more than 9 cm from the opening?

It is doubtful that a hymen would be located more than 9 cm. from the opening since the average vagina is 8 cm. in length. If you have a hymen, it should stretch across the vaginal opening. While it can be worrisome not to have one because of societal beliefs, whether or not you have a hymen is NOT an indication of virginity. A woman's hymen can be torn, broken, or stretched anytime in her youth by certain kinds of exercise, participation in sports, or by inserting fingers or objects, like a toothbrush, into her vagina. Furthermore, some women are born with partial hymens or none at all. Thank you for visiting the Sexual Health Network. Yvonne K. Fulbright, MS.Ed.
