Question:
On the part of skin that connects the vagina with the anus I have broken out in something that looks like a rash. The red bumps look similar to hives, are only slightly raised and are red and itchy. They also burn a bit. I suspect that this might be because I bought some thongs that were really small and the piece of fabric that flosses through the butt cheeks through to the crotch was too tight and rubbed the skin raw. It also looks like the skin is broken, like a rugburn. Anyhow, I am very concerned that I could possibly have HPV. I am 17, only had two sexual partners (both long, long term boyfriends) and never had unprotected sex. I am so so so scared. Please give me some advice (without the obvious: going to the doctor). I am going to my women's health specialist the minute they open. Please answer. Thanks.

Thank you for your consultation. From what you said, especially that you have never had unrpotected sex, the probablility of HPV is remote. A mechanical irriatation is more likely. Add the fact that this area is usually moist and not well areated, it may take a little bit more time than usually to heal.
Editors note: While it may simply be an irritation from the too-tight thong, I am glad you are going to see your health care provider. They should check you for herpes or any other infection to rule these out. If it is just an irritation, it should heal fairly quickly without any further symptoms.
