Question:
ive been on the pill for around 4 months yet im also taking an antibiotic, yet for not serious conditions. i want to stop taking the antibiotic so i will have better protection from preganancy with the pill. does the pill delay an egg from leaving the ovary or how does the pill prevent the fertilization? ive never had sex with out protection of a condom yet because im scared of getting pregant. if i have unprotected sex with my boyfriend then the pill will help prevent pregancy right? i would just hate that time before my period comes to see if im pregnant of not and if my period does come. how long would it take for the pill to become fully active again after i get off the antibiotic? is there a certain time when you should or shouldnt have sex while your on the pill?

I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you. The holiday time is so busy that it takes awhile to get through all my questions.
Your's is such a good question, and you seem to be very well informed about the interference between one drug (the antibiotic) and another (the Pill).
The Pill works better when there is no other drug being taken into the body because there is nothing to divert it from its major function- to prevent the ovulation of an egg. If no egg is produced and released from the ovary then pregnancy cannot happen. Different combination of pills work in different ways though, so often the Pill has other ways that it reduces the chance of pregnancy. It can also change the thickness of the mucous in the cervix and make the uterine lining thin. Both of these deter sperm or fertilization if for some reason the egg should get ovulated. That is why hormone pills are so effective. They have several ways they can prevent pregnancy.
They don't prevent disease transmission though which is why it is important to use the latex condom as a back up for both disease AND pregnancy. Using the combination makes pregnancy so unlikely that you shouldn't feel worried.
I don't know if anyone knows how long it takes before the body is no longer reacting to the antibiotic but if you keep using both the Pill and the condom, you are protected. Since the Pill keeps an egg from being ovulated there is no time that is better or worse for having intercourse. That is why this method is so popular. People can engage in sexual play whenever and not worry that if it should move on to intercourse it won't be a problem as far as pregnancy is concerned.
I hope your holiday season has been fun and that you haven't worried too much. As long as you keep using the Pill and condom you are definitely very safe.Reviewed by: Kathleen VanKirk DHS
