Question:
I gave my boyfriend oral sex and afterwards I realized that I had a soar inside my mouth, a cold soar. I was wondering if it is possible to pass this onto his penis or if I have nothing to worry about. Thank you.

Thanks for a very good question. It is difficult to know what virus is causing the cold sore, but it certainly is possible to transmit viruses from the mouth to the penis. It is not an automatic transfer, so it isn't something that will absolutely happen but it is something you should have the partner look for on his penis.
That is one of the ways that herpes is transmitted. There is oral sex onto the penis and then the penis is inserted into a vagina.
Not all cold sores are symptoms of herpes virus though so it is not something to worry a lot about. Just be sure to have the partner continue to check his own penis, since it can take months for herpes to show up. If you really want to know what is causing the cold sore, you can have a doctor take a sample from it and have it analyzed in a lab.
Thanks for your concern in not passing something on that could be harmful.Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
