Question:
I have an odor that smells like ammonia in the vaginal area. I was treated recently with Macrobid, but I don't know what this odor is. My boyfriend has all but stopped seeing me, because after we have sex, he claims to smell a bad odor. I don't know if this is Bacterial Vaginosis. My doctor checked me but said everything looked fine. I really want to get rid of this odor. Can you help?

Glad you found our site. You might have bacterial vaginosis (BV), also known as non-specific vaginitis, haemophilus, & gardnerella. It has an offensive "fishy" odor, which is strong when the discharge comes in contact with alkaline such as soap or semen, so you my notice it most in the shower or after intercourse.
Itching & irritation can be absent or mild. BV is so common that it is often believed to be normal vaginal odor in women & has led to the jokes & useless "feminine hygiene products."
Your doctor must take a sample of your vaginal discharge to study under the microscope & perhaps do a vaginal culture. Treatment for BV is usually metronidazole (Flagyl). I recommend treating the male sexual partner to avoid re-infection.
Good luck & let us know if we can be of help in the future.
