Question:
Dear Dr. McCaffree, I am an Allied Health program teacher (high school). Whenever I teach the unit on STD's, questions always arise about the history or origin of the diseases. This is my weak spot. I have been all over the internet trying to find answers. Can you help me? Thank you.

I don't know if this will be a help or not but there is a book that you should be able to find through interlibrary loan if it isn't in your school library entitled the Human Sexuality Encyclopedia by Vern Bullough. There is a section on sexually transmitted diseases that for each disease gives a little history on when it was first discovered. Keep in mind that many diseases originated through mutation of another germ, so it will be difficult to know for sure. For HIV the best book still is Randy Shilts history of the infection, The Band Played On. You also may be able to go to the CDC web site and ask them for the information. Also, www.iwannaknow.com (or org) is an STD site that is the best around. It may help you and is a good site to send your students to as well. I am a public school teacher and find students like to get information from that site.
