Question:
Like 2 weeks ago, i recieved my first shot of depo-provera( yes it was during the first 5 days of my period) and today i had sex with my boyfriend again.. but the thing is that the condom slipped off kind of early so we continued without one.he did not ejaculate inside of me... but i'm aware of the "pre-cum" if you will... can you please tell me what the risk/chance of pregnancy would be in that situation?

Thanks for taking the time to send your question to SexualHealth.Com. Yours is a question that many women become concerned about. Under the circumstances you describe, there would be little, if any, chance that you could have gotten pregnant. Since you received your Depo shot during the first 5 days of your period, it became effective immediately. There is also much too much made of pre-cum (pre-ejaculatory fluid). Many people, including sex educators, have blown the importance of pre-cum out of proportion, to the point where it's yet another "body fluid" that people are paranoid of. Is it true that there is some sperm in the pre-cum? Yes, but the amount is negligable. Through the course of my practice and years as an educator, I've found that women who have gotten pregnant by pre-cum actually had their partners begin ejaculating before pulling out. One thing that nobody talks about is the fact that if your boyfriend urinates before or between ejaculations, this will virtually eliminate all traces of sperm from the urethra and, hence, the pre-cum (remember, we men urinate and ejaculate from the same tube). It is important to take into consideration, however, that some sexually transmitted infections and diseases can be spread through the pre-cum. Urination will not eliminate these. I would also like to suggest a couple of condom-related things. If regular condoms tend to slip off your boyfriend's penis when he is hard, he may want to consider buying a brand that is a bit smaller. There are some Japanese brands (like Kimono) that make a condom that fits more snugly. The other point I would like to make is if the condom does slip off, have him put on a fresh one instead of proceeding with nothing. That sort of defeats the whole purpose of wearing one in the first place! He shouldn't necessarily worry about having to buy a lot of condoms because most family planning clinics, like Planned Parenthood and local health departments, make condoms available for free. Having a stock is a good idea for people who are sexually active. I hope this was helpful to you. I wish you the best of luck and loving. Take care and feel free to write in if you ever have questions or concerns. Larry Siegel
