Question:
Hi! i am a 19 year old girl and have been going out with my boyfried for 6 months. Recently we decided to not to wait any longer and to go ahead and have sex. My concern is that sinc i am a virgin, will this involve a great deal of pain? I've heared from friends that if one has been or is active in the past it is unlikely that her hymen would still be intact. I myself am a very active person(swimming, track and field, etc). I would like to know if there is any way that i can find out if my hymen still exists. And i would also much appreciate if you could give me any advice at all and let me know abut the pain that this might involve. I'm in great need of your help since this problem has been on my mind for days. Thankyou CONFUSED

Thank you for your request. The hymen is a thin membrane situated less than an inch from the vaginal orifice. it does not tear simply because you were active before, no. Usually it tears with the first intercourse. It may cause some discomfort, true, but never severe pain... Some bleeding is expected, usually a few spots, rarely more.
